The Alpha 300 is Garmin’s best dog tracking handheld. Everything they learned from the Alpha 100, 200, and 200i series went into this one: bigger display, longer battery, faster access to the controls that matter most in the field.
The 4-inch sunlight-readable touchscreen is large enough to show a meaningful map with your dogs’ positions, track history, and status at a glance. The dedicated top buttons let you trigger stimulation, tone, and vibration without looking down or unlocking the screen, which matters when you’re pushing through cover and a dog needs a correction right now. Eighteen levels of continuous and momentary stimulation plus tone and vibration cover every training and hunting scenario you’ll run into.
Monitor up to 20 active dogs simultaneously at 2.5-second update intervals out to 9 miles. Store up to 250 dogs in the inactive list so you’re not adding and removing collars before each hunt when you rotate your pack or team up with other hunters. Hunt metrics show distance run, speed, and time on the ground per dog.
Fifty-five hours of battery life on the user-replaceable battery pack means four to five full hunting days between charges. When the battery runs low, swap a fresh one in 30 seconds without tools. TopoActive maps and direct-to-device BirdsEye Satellite Imagery downloads give you the terrain context to understand where your dogs are going and why.
Alpha 300 vs. Alpha 300i: The base 300 is the tracking and training handheld. The 300i adds built-in inReach satellite two-way messaging and interactive SOS. If you regularly hunt remote country where cell service is gone and want a communication safety net, the 300i is worth the price difference. If you hunt accessible country with people nearby, the base 300 has everything you need.
Pair the Alpha 300 with a fēnix 8, fēnix 8 Pro, or Instinct 3 watch for wrist-based dog tracking without touching the handheld.
Compatible collars: TT25, T20, TT15X, T5X, TT15, TT15 Mini, T5, T5 Mini, and most current Garmin tracking and training collars. Want the complete system? See the Alpha 300/300i + TT25 Bundle.
Our take: If you’re building a new Garmin system from scratch, start here. The 55-hour battery and top-button operation are the two features that separate the 300 from everything below it in the lineup, and both of them matter every single time you use it. And, if you hunt anywhere without cell service or have folks counting on you at home, the inReach capability (Subscription required) of the Alpha 300i makes it a no brainer.
