Description

The Garmin fenix 8 Pro smart watch does something no Garmin watch has done before: it puts inReach satellite communication directly inside the watch. Leave your phone in the truck, leave your separate inReach device at home. Voice calls over LTE, two-way satellite messaging, LiveTrack location sharing, and interactive SOS. All from your wrist, anywhere on the planet.

In includes all the health, wellness, and training data you could ask for, and still runs the full dog tracking widget to keep track of your dogs right from your wrist.

Set your Alpha 300, Alpha 200i, or Alpha 200 Plus to Broadcast Mode and the fēnix 8 Pro displays your dog’s name, distance, direction, and on-point or treed alerts on your wrist, same as every other fēnix 8 model. The difference is what happens when you’re in country where cell service is gone and your hunting partners need to know where you are, or you need to know they’re okay.

What the Pro adds over the standard fēnix 8: Built-in inReach LTE and two-way satellite messaging. Voice calls from your wrist. Interactive SOS with live two-way communication with Garmin Response. A brighter 2,000-nit AMOLED display, roughly 2x the peak brightness of the standard fēnix 8 AMOLED. Louder speakers. All of this requires an inReach subscription ($7.99/month or $49.99/year for the Safety plan).

What stays the same: Gen 5 Elevate sensor with ECG. Sapphire crystal lens. Titanium bezel. 40-meter dive rating. LED flashlight. Preloaded TopoActive maps. Every training metric in the standard fēnix 8.

The tradeoff: The Pro is thicker (16mm vs 13.8mm on the standard AMOLED) and costs $100-200 more. If you hunt areas with reliable cell service and don’t need standalone satellite communication, the fēnix 8 AMOLED delivers nearly identical performance for less. But if you regularly run dogs in remote country, backcountry bear camps, remote coon hunting, mountain lion country, late-season birds in the middle of nowhere, the Pro’s inReach is the kind of insurance you only think about when you need it.

The MicroLED edition (51mm): A step beyond the standard Pro. 4,500-nit MicroLED display, visually stunning, and the brightest watch Garmin has ever shipped. At $1,699.99 it’s a significant investment, but for hunters who want the absolute top of the Garmin lineup and use the watch as a daily driver, it’s in a class of its own.

Compatible handhelds for dog tracking: Alpha 300/300i, Alpha 200/200i, Alpha 200 Plus, Alpha 10, Astro 430, and Pro 550 Plus.

Note: The Pro is available in 47mm and 51mm only. No 43mm option. The satellite and LTE antennas require the additional space. All Pro models are Sapphire titanium only.

Our take: The fēnix 8 Pro is for the hunter who goes deepest and stays longest. If you’re running dogs in serious backcountry, the kind of places where a broken leg or a lost hunter becomes a genuine emergency, the built-in inReach isn’t a luxury. It’s the right call. Pair it with your Alpha or Pro550+ system and you have the most complete, most capable hunting setup Garmin has ever built.
