Some hunters want a vivid screen. Some hunters want a watch that will test the limits of their memory to charge it. The fēnix 8 Solar is for the second kind.
The Garmin fēnix 8 Solar runs on Garmin’s Power Sapphire solar charging lens. A solar-assisted MIP display that harvests energy from sunlight and dramatically extends battery life. In smartwatch mode with typical outdoor use, the 47mm runs up to 28 days. The 51mm reaches 48 days. On a week-long hunting trip, you leave the charger at home.
Like all fēnix 8 models, the Solar integrates directly with your Alpha series and Pro550+ dog tracking handheld. Connect your Alpha 300, Alpha 200i, or Alpha 200 Plus and your watch displays dog name, distance, direction, and on-point or treed alerts on the dog tracking widget, hands-free..
The display difference: The Solar uses a MIP (Memory-in-Pixel) display rather than AMOLED. MIP reads like a printed page in direct sunlight. No squinting, no glare, always-on without battery penalty. If most of your hunting happens outside in daylight, the Solar’s display is arguably more practical than the AMOLED. If you want the vivid color display, see the fēnix 8 AMOLED.
Built to the same standard: All Solar models come standard with titanium bezel and sapphire crystal lens. No base materials option here. Dive-rated to 40 meters, tested to MIL-STD-810H for thermal, shock, and water resistance. Built-in speaker and mic for wrist-based calls, LED flashlight with white and red modes, Gen 5 Elevate sensor with ECG.
Size: 47mm for standard wrists (1.3″ screen, 22mm band). 51mm for larger wrists or anyone who wants every last hour of battery life (1.4″ screen, 26mm band). Note: the Solar does not come in 43mm. That size is AMOLED only.
Need standalone satellite messaging without your phone? See the fēnix 8 Pro with built-in inReach LTE and satellite.
Compatible handhelds for dog tracking: Alpha 300/300i, Alpha 200/200i, Alpha 200 Plus, Alpha 10, Astro 430, and Pro 550 Plus.
Our take: For hunters who spend multiple consecutive days in the field and don’t want to think about charging, the Solar is the right call. The always-on MIP display reads better in bright sunlight than any AMOLED. The battery life is genuinely multi-week, and you get every other fēnix 8 feature including the dog tracking widget. If you’re running a coon camp, a week-long pheasant trip, or extended backcountry time with dogs, the Solar outlasts everything else Garmin makes.
