The Garmin fēnix 9 is a premium multisport GPS smartwatch that pairs with your Alpha 300/300i, Alpha 200i, Alpha 200 Plus, Alpha 10, or Pro 550 Plus for wrist-based dog tracking. Dog name, distance, direction of travel, and on-point or treed alerts show up on the dog tracking widget. You keep your eyes on the cover and your hands on the gun.

What changed from the fēnix 8: The display is more than twice as bright. Memory doubled from 32GB to 64GB, which matters when you carry several TopoActive map regions and music at the same time. Routable maps are smoother, and the NextFork map guide tells you what is coming at trail junctions before you get there. Stamina tracking now adjusts to your fitness and training history instead of treating every day the same.

Display: AMOLED across all three sizes, sapphire crystal lens, titanium bezel. Garmin rates it at more than twice the brightness of the fēnix 8. That is the difference between squinting at a map at noon in open CRP and just reading it.

Built for the field: Dive-rated to 40 meters, 10 ATM, leakproof metal buttons, and tested to U.S. military standards for thermal, shock, and water resistance. Built-in LED flashlight with white and red modes. Speaker and microphone handle calls through your paired phone, and you can record voice notes with your hands full.

Battery: Up to 10 days in smartwatch mode on the 43mm, 16 days on the 47mm, 29 days on the 51mm. In GPS activity mode you get 18, 30, and 54 hours. Expedition mode runs to 31 days on the 51mm. A long weekend of hunting will not come close to draining it.

Size guide: The 43mm is the lightest at 61 grams and takes a 20mm band. The 47mm is the one most hunters should buy: 1.4 inch screen, 22mm band, 75 grams. The 51mm is for larger wrists or anyone who wants the 29 day battery and does not mind 91 grams on a 26mm band.

Titanium or carbon gray DLC: Same watch, different bezel finish. The DLC coating runs darker and hides scuffs better. The 43mm comes in titanium only.

fēnix 9 or fēnix 9 Pro? The Pro adds a full titanium case, a green flashlight mode, a 1.5 inch display on the 51mm, and optional inReach satellite and LTE messaging. Our take: This is the watch to build an Alpha system around. The dog widget is the whole reason a bird hunter or a houndsman buys a watch at this level, and the fēnix 9 runs it on a brighter screen with twice the storage of the watch it replaces. If you already own a fēnix 8 AMOLED, yours is still a good watch. If you are buying your first one, buy this.
